I have managed to get the Wrong permissions on configuration file, should not be world writable! issue to go away,
The solution : set the config.inc.php to read only (FOR ALL USERS) : this works for ubuntu 8.04 / glassfish. While there are still more issues, once written - the config file can be set read only
