For anyone following this thread, after obtaining and replacing with the 1.1.1 version from
http://commons.apache.org/downloads/download_logging.cgi, rebuilding the webapp, the issue went away and the webapp with ejb 3.1's runs. Previous versions were 1.0.3 and 1.0.4.
