In spite of the muddled question, you seem to have understood the problem! Yes, I see that your suggestion will work, I am just overcomplicating things after trying to follow the JsonFromJaxb example.
In the context of our application, we need to ensure that the javascript client gets the event code and has the opportunity to respond appropriately, so yes, we are doing the "what the heck" thing.
