Further to Alex and Manfried's responses...
It seems you should be able to use your login page, but better would be to employ that provided within the browser. See
http://www.netbeans.org/kb/60/web/security-webapps.html
(if you are using netbeans obviously).
I had a go at that as it seemed the answer to all my prayers. Unfortunately I came to grief with a deployment error. See my post:-
