I am seeing some interest regarding this, so I'll follow-up on how I made it work:
Add system-wide property via the web interface:
"System Properties" (at the bottom) -> solr.solr.home set to /home/solr
Copy example/* directory to /home/solr
Restart the domain.
I am seeing some errors in the server.log but at least the solr app comes up and appears to be happy.
