We're using jmeter to create 100 uses accessing the webapp. Netstat does show the active number of connections increasing and when ps is run you can see th 30 IDLE connections to postgres. The number of ACTIVE connections to the database (viewed with ps) never gets above 5.
If we deploy the same app in tomcat the active connections rocket up to what ever is needed. It's really strange.
