Actually, in GlassFish v2, we added support for a %time-taken% token to the list of supported tokens for the "format" attribute of the <access-log> element in domain.xml. Once specified, this will log the time (in milliseconds) it took to service each request.

Unfortunately, this feature has not been added to the docs yet. I will ping the docs team.
This means that you can have the response time printed to the access log without having to turn on monitoring.
