What version of GlassFish are you seeing this with?
Some of this was addressed in the fix to issue 2310.
https://glassfish.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=2310
The fix does not provide an exception your code can catch but rather gives the user multiple chances to log in correctly.
