If you are Java Developer and Virtualization beginner use XEN it have simple memory model and you will for sure not need to process any complex APPs configuration tuning opposite to most OpenVZ environments, see more in:

Xen or OpenVZ VPS?
http://hostingfu.com/article/xen-or-openvz

For optimal OpenVZ configuration you need to have deep knowledge about your all APPs
and how they use memory related resources, for thread based APPs we can often hit this issue expresed on OpenVZ WiKi:

"Some multi-threaded applications are especially bad at using their memory, and their rate of allocated to used memory may happen to 1000%"

For Java related issues in OpenVZ see:

*SOLVED* Java: Could not reserve enough space for object heap

For general OpenVZ/Virtuozzo memory tunning advices see:

Hope this help
