As for the size, unfortunately you have not missed anything. You need that whopping big JAR file, much of which the client will never use.
This has been a sore point for a while in GlassFish v2, but we are greatly improving things in v3 with the reorientation towards a much more modular approach. This should result in a drastic reduction in the size of JARs required on the client for either Java EE application clients or, as in your case, stand-alone Java clients.
As for the missing class, was it by chance something from servertobeans?
