Do you deploy with --verify=true ? Skip this flag, and Hibernate will tell you if it thinks something is not right when it processes your PU (most probably during creation of the 1st EM).
There is no generic API for GlassFish to use to be able to call validation from a specific provider. TopLink Essentials being the bundled provider, is called with predefined properties to perform the validation only.
