GlassFish in Ubuntu's Multiverse is v1. Version 2 was recently released.
I would suggest you download v2 from here: https://glassfish.dev.java.net/downloads/v2-b58g.html
and do a clean install with the instruction from the download page.
This should pick-up the Java version you have in your path.
Having http://localhost:8080/ respond means serving static content is working, nothing more really. Let us know how you progress.
