I didn't actually test it but I really don't think they support it. The backtick syntax had to be explicitly requested (meaning they didn't support escaping in annotations at all before) and what they did is take what Hibernate already supported (backtip denotes quoting) and simply extend it into JPA annotations.
Does anyone know whether JPA2 plan on standardizing this? I think I'll write them an email just in case.
