Two points i should have mentioned that might be relevant.
The "remote" calls are actually on the same box through the loopback connection so i don't think it is a network issue.
The client starts multiple threads each creating its own initialcontext and reference to the EJB. I've read that the context isn't thread safe unless you get multiple references, is that correct?
