This error seems to have gone away since I increased the ulimit -n.

We faced the same problem, but in Tomcat environment; then we actually
changed the Tomcat and JDK version (old and new were both 2 versions of
1.5) and it was gone. We could not find the reason for it; but our best
guess was that we had to read and write from/to filesystem and for some
reason though we closed the stream, they were not closed. So I think
that Binod's suggestion of changing the JDK version is worth at least
testing.
