It really depends on the IDE you are using.
NetBeans has a very nice support for GlassFish (use 5.5 for GlassFish v1 and 5.5.1 beta for GlassFish v2). There is also support for Eclipse WTP, IntelliJ and others. See https://glassfishplugins.dev.java.net/
You can also do a lightweight integration using the asant commands to start/stop/deploy GlassFish.
