JPA: Mapping boolean values

Is there a way to specify how boolean values are represented in the database. The default is '0' and '1', but legacy databases might have defined booleans as 'N' and 'Y'. I'm almost certain I've read somewhere that this is possible with JPA, but I can't find it.
