Most of the times the notifs help. But my latest experience taught me
otherwise :)

The mail listed only my changes and it appeared as if they were the
cause of failure.
Later it was found it was not so.

Perhaps there is a way to retain in the notif mail the checkin log that
caused the failure the first time?
I think that would help in troubleshooting the actual cause of failure
and avoid false alarms.
