Absolutely. I deleted the target directory AND I deleted the module's
jar file from the local maven repository. That's why I was perplexed.
It's as if maven downloads a stale jar from somewhere else and then
pulls out the class that is supposed to be gone.

Have you issued a mvn clean? The .class file is likely still in the
target/ directory...
