update: I finally got a clean build, and the only thing I tried
differently this time was a "maven bootstrap-all" before the "maven
bootstrap;maven build"

(BTW, I still got the same cookie rejected and chmod error messages.)

So, is a bootstrap-all required for some reason after receent commits,
or did it just happen to fix a problem specific to my workspace?
