That's great news that it's technically possible.
Is there any chance of it being more officially supported?

It's not an issue of performance.
It's an issue of apache being the front, world accessable entry point.
And having the appserver behind a firewall.
It's a more secure setup.

Another advantage of fronting with apache is that the appserver can be moved
around.
It's much more common for the appserver to need to change machines, or have
one of a pair or more of appservers to be down for maintenance/redeployment,
than to have the webserver change machines or need to be down.
It also allows aggregating multiple appservers into one unified URL space.

So fronting with apache allows a more flexible infrastructure, while
maintaining availability and secuirty.

Of course, with a setup of this magnitude, one needs to know it's going to
work without a hitch.

If anyone else is using a setup like this, please chime in, so it can get
more support.
I was actually under the impression that this was in more common use with
large installations.

Check out http://weblogs.java.net/blog/amyroh/archive/2005/06/index.html and
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=5059905 for instructions.

You'll need tomcat-jk.jar and specify port number using sysproperty in
processLauncher.xml.

<sysproperty key="com.sun.enterprise.web.connector.enableJK" value="8009"/>

Hope this helps,
Amy
