Managing Geography Structures, Hierarchies, and Validation


You are an Applications Administrator who wants to start to configure the geography structure, hierarchy, and validation for the country geography of the United States. You start at the Manage Geographies page.


Steps:

  1. You first need to define which geography types are included in the United States geography structure.

     

    Click the Structure Defined button.

  2. You do not want to copy an existing country structure, and so you need to create a new country structure.

     

    Click the Create button.

  3. You decide to add the State geography type as the first level in the geography structure.

     

    Click the State list item.

  5. You add the City geography type as the second level in the geography structure.

  7. You decide to add additional geography types at a later date.

     

    Click the Save and Close button.

  8. Now you need to define the geography hierarchy. You want to add the geographies for each geography type, in order to create the geography hierarchy for the United States.

     

    Click the Hierarchy Defined button.

  9. You choose to create the state of California, so first you highlight the United States.

     

    Click the United States object.

  11. You enter the primary name.

     

    Enter the desired information into the Name field. Enter

     a valid value
     e.g.
     "CA"

  12. You now want to enter a city geography in the state of California.

     

    Click the Save and Close button.

  13. You enter the city of San Francisco under the state of California.

     

    Click the CA object.

  15. You enter the name San Francisco as the primary name.

     

    Enter the desired information into the Name field. Enter

     a valid value
     e.g.
     "San Francisco"

  16. You decide to add to the Geography Hierarchy at a later date. You can use the Manage File Import Activities task to import geography hierarchy using a csv or xml file.

     

    Click the Save and Close button.

  18. You now need to specify the geography validations for the geography types you have added to the United States.

     

    Click the Validation Defined button.

  19. You define the geography mapping and validation for the United States default address style format, called the No Styles Format.

     

    Click the No Styles Format object.

  20. Firstly, you choose to map the State Geography Type to the State attribute.

     

    Click the State object.

  21. You then decide to enable the State Geography Type for List of Values and Geography Validation.

     

    Click the Enable List of Values option.

  23. You map the City Geography Type to the respective City attribute.

  24. You decide to enable the City Geography Type for Geography Validation only.

  25. You want the application to generate an error when an invalid address element is entered for a geography type that is enabled for geography validation.

     

    Click the Error list item.

  26. You decide to add more geography validations when you have added to the United States geography structures and hierarchies. You also decide to define the geography mapping and validation for other Address Style Formats at a later date.

     

    Click the Save and Close button.
