Multiple Security Vulnerabilities in the XML Library (see libxml2(3)) Bundled With Sun Management Center (SunMC) May Result in Arbitrary Code Execution or a Denial of Service (DoS)

1. Impact

Multiple security vulnerabilities in the XML library (see libxml2(3)) bundled with Sun Management Center 3.6.1 and 4.0 may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the SunMC application or crash the SunMC application causing a Denial of Service (DoS) by providing a specially crafted XML file. The SunMC application runs with root privileges.

Additional information regarding these issues is available in the following documents:

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Sun Management Center 3.6.1 (for Solaris 7) without patch 123919-12
  • Sun Management Center 3.6.1 (for Solaris 8) without patch 123920-12
  • Sun Management Center 3.6.1 (for Solaris 9) without patch 123921-12
  • Sun Management Center 3.6.1 (for Solaris 10) without patch 123923-12
  • Sun Management Center 4.0 (for Solaris 8) without patch 127680-07
  • Sun Management Center 4.0 (for Solaris 9) without patch 127681-07
  • Sun Management Center 4.0 (for Solaris 10) without patch 127683-07
x86 Platform:
  • Sun Management Center 3.6.1 (for Solaris 9) without patch 123922-11

  • Sun Management Center 4.0 (for Solaris 9) without patch 127682-07
  • Sun Management Center 4.0 (for Solaris 10) without patch 143324-01
Notes:

1. These issues affect systems installed with Sun Management Center (SunMC) server and agent software. Sun Management Center can be downloaded from:

SunMC is not bundled with Solaris.

2. To determine if SunMC server is installed on a Solaris system or what version is present, the following command can be run:
$ pkginfo -l SUNWessrv | grep VERSION
VERSION:  3.6.1,REV=2.7.2003.08.28
If the following error message is returned, the "SUNWessrv" package and SunMC server are not installed on the system.
ERROR: information for "SUNWessrv" was not found
3. To determine if SunMC agent is installed on a Solaris system or what version is present, the following command can be run:
$ pkginfo -l SUNWescom | grep VERSION
VERSION:  3.6.1,REV=2.7.2003.08.28
If the following error message is returned, the "SUNWescom" package and SunMC agent are not installed on the system.
ERROR: information for "SUNWescom" was not found
3. Symptoms

There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate the described issues have been exploited.
