A Security Vulnerability in the Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent May Result in a Denial of Service (DoS) to Web Proxy Server 4.0

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent may allow a local or remote unprivileged user to crash the Sun Java System Web Proxy Server, when this is the deployment container that the Agent is running in. This is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

Sun would like to thank Jason Jones of Inner Security Ltd (http://www.innersecurity.co.uk) for bringing this issue to our attention.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases for all platforms (Solaris 8, 9, and 10 (x86 and SPARC), Linux and Windows):
  • Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent 2.2 (for Web Proxy Server 4.0) without patch 141248-01
To determine the version of Web Proxy Server on a system, the following command can be run:
$ <ps_install>/bin/proxy/bin/proxyd -v
Sun Java System Web Proxy Server 4.0.6 B05/12/2007 13:24
For instructions on how to determine the version of Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent on a system, see the "Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent 2.2 Release Notes" at:

and see the 'amAgent' log file for details. If you are uncertain of the location of the 'amAgent' log file, you can find it in the web agent 'AMAgent.properties' configuration file as the value assigned to the following property:

com.sun.am.policy.agents.config.local.log.file

3. Symptoms

If the described issue is exploited, the Web Proxy Server protected by Policy Agent may crash, making its services unavailable briefly until the Web Proxy Server is restarted by the Proxy Server's watchdog process, which monitors and restarts Proxy Server instances.

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue.  Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases for all platforms (Solaris 8, 9, and 10 (x86 and SPARC), Linux and Windows):
  • Sun Java System Access Manager Policy Agent 2.2 (for Web Proxy Server 4.0) with patch 141248-01 or later
