A Security Vulnerability in the Logical Domains (LDoms) Manager May Allow Unauthorized System Access and Escalation of Privileges

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the Logical Domains (LDoms) Manager (ldm(1M)) may allow a local unprivileged user to circumvent SPARC Firmware password protection and thus gain unauthorized access to data or gain elevated privileges on the system.

2. Contributing Factors

SPARC Platform:
  • Logical Domain Manager 1.0 without patch 139395-02
  • Logical Domain Manager 1.0.1 without patch 139396-02

  • Logical Domain Manager 1.0.3 without patch 139398-01

Note: The x86 Platform is not affected by this issue, as Logical Domains (LDoms) software is supported only on the Sun SPARC Platform.

To determine the version of the Logical Domains (LDoms) Manager installed on the system, the ldm(1M) command may be used:

$ /opt/SUNWldm/bin/ldm -V
Logical Domain Manager (v 1.0.3)
Hypervisor control protocol v 1.1
Using Hypervisor MD v 1.1
System PROM:
Hypervisor  v.1.6.1     @(#)Hypervisor 1.6.1 2008/02/11 12:15\015
OpenBoot    v.4.28.1    @(#)OBP 4.28.1 2008/02/11 13:04
