Security Vulnerability Relating to the posix_fallocate(3C) System Call May Lead to a Denial of Service (DoS)

1. Impact

A security vulnerability relating to the posix_fallocate(3C) system call may allow a local unprivileged user to panic the system, which is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_29 through snv_90
x86 Platform:
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_29 through snv_90

Note: Solaris 8, 9 and 10 are not impacted by this issue

OpenSolaris distributions may include additional bug fixes above and beyond the build from which it was derived. The base build can be derived as follows:

$ uname -a
SunOS  phys-node-1 5.11 snv_86 i86pc i386 i86pc

3. Symptoms

When this issue occurs, the system will produce a panic message similar to the following:

panic[cpu12]/thread=30018c432e0: ufs_putapage: bn == UFS_HOLE

with a stack trace similar to the following:

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

SPARC Platform:
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_91 or later
x86 Platform:
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_91 or later
