A Security Vulnerability in the namefs Kernel module may result in Arbitrary Code Execution or a Denial of Service (DoS)

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the namefs kernel module may allow a local unprivileged user the ability to execute arbitrary code in kernel context or panic the system. The ability to panic the system is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 8 without patch 114984-02
  • Solaris 9 without patch 114971-03
  • Solaris 10 without patch 136716-01
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 8 without patch 114985-02
  • Solaris 9 without patch 138570-01
  • Solaris 10 without patch 136717-01

3. Symptoms

There are no predictable symptoms that would indicate that the issue has been exploited to execute arbitrary code. In the case of a Denial of Service (DoS), system panics will vary if this issue is exploited. Typically, the type of panic is one of "BAD TRAP".

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

SPARC Platform

  • Solaris 8 with patch 114984-02 or later
  • Solaris 9 with patch 114971-03 or later
  • Solaris 10 with patch 136716-01 or later

x86 Platform

  • Solaris 8 with patch 114985-02 or later
  • Solaris 9 with patch 138570-01 or later
