A Security Vulnerability in IP Multicast Filter processing of Sockets may lead to a system panic or possible execution of Arbitrary Code

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the Solaris 10 IP (see ip(7P)) kernel module relating to setting a socket's multicast filter may allow a local unprivileged user the ability to panic the system or execute arbitrary commands with all privileges. The ability to panic a system is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 10 without patch 137111-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_13 through snv_91
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 10 without patch 137112-01
  • OpenSolaris based upon builds snv_13 through snv_91
Note: Solaris 8 and 9 are not affected by this issue.

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below.

  • Solaris 10 with patch 137112-01 or later
