A Security Vulnerability in the Handling of Self Encapsulated IP Packets (see details below)

1. Impact

A Security vulnerability in Solaris, related to the handling of self encapsulated IP packets,  may allow a remote privileged user to panic the system. The ability to panic the system is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

SPARC Platform
  • Solaris 8 without patch 116965-32
  • Solaris 9 without patch 114344-34
  • Solaris 10 without patch 127111-11
x86 Platform
  • Solaris 8 without patch 116966-31
  • Solaris 9 without patch 119435-22

3. Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the system will panic with a stack trace similar to the following:

4. Workaround

To work around the described issue, firewalls may be used to block self encapsulated IP packets.
