A security vulnerability in the vuidmice STREAMS modules (vuidmice (7M)) - see below for details

1. Impact

A security vulnerability in the vuidmice STREAMS modules (vuidmice (7M)) may allow a local unprivileged user the ability to panic the system. This is a type of Denial of Service (DoS).

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

x86 Platform

  • Solaris 9 without patch 117419-04
  • Solaris 10 without patch 127751-02

Note 1: This issue does not affect Solaris on the SPARC platform.

Note 2: This issue does not affect Solaris 8 on the x86 platform.

3. Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the system may panic with a panic string similar to the following:

    panic[cpu1]/thread=d2a35de0: BAD TRAP: type=e (#pf Page fault)
    rp=d2a35c80 addr=10 occurred in module "vuid3ps2" due to a NULL pointer dereference

and a stack trace similar to the following:

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue. Please see the Resolution section below.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

x86 Platform

  • Solaris 9 with patch 117419-04 or later
  • Solaris 10 with patch 127751-02 or later
