Web Services Concepts

Web services make use of existing Internet infrastructure, and piggyback on existing and ubiquitous transport protocols, such as HTTP.

Using an emerging group of standards, organizations are able to make software available as a service over the internet so that when you use a web service in your application, you do not need to know how it has been implemented. The standards are:

and they build upon the existing XML standard and HTTP protocol.
