Creating a Diagram of Offline Database Definitions

Offline database tables, their columns and constraints, the foreign keys between them can all be modeled graphically on a database diagram.

To create a diagram of database objects:

  1. Create a new diagram using the Database Diagram icon Database Diagram icon   in the New Gallery. For more information, see Create a New Diagram.
  2. Create the elements you require on the diagram using the Database Component Palette.

    Table Table

Optional Foreign Key  Optional Foreign Key

mandatory foreign key  Mandatory Foreign Key

To create a foreign key, click first in the owning table, then in the target table. The Create Foreign Key dialog allows you to choose the column in the target table to associate with the primary key in the owning table. To use an existing column, select it from the list. To create a new column type in the column name. In this case, the new column is created in the target table.

For more information on creating nodes and connectors on a diagram, see Creating Nodes on a Diagram and Connecting Nodes on a Diagram.
  3. Columns and constraints can be created on the diagram. For more information, see About In-Place Creation and Editing.

Tip: You can also annotate your diagram by creating and attaching notes to diagram element, and adding URL links to other locations such as files or web locations. For more information, see Annotating a Diagram.
