Style Sheets


Style sheets allow authors to create consistent styling for web pages.


Steps:

  1. Click the File menu.

  3. Click the Style Sheet button.

  4. We can add styles to the style sheet and create variations based on output type or language. We will also see a preview of each item.

  5. First, we'll add a style for Heading 1.

    Click the Item menu.

  6. Click the Heading 1 button.

  7. Since this is our only style for Heading 1, it will be the default Heading 1 style. If we were to create another style for Heading 1, we would be able to choose

    between them and that means we should give our style a descriptive name.

  8. Enter the desired information into the Style name field. Enter

     a valid value
     e.g.
     "HR Heading 1"

  9. Now we can edit the style.

    Click in the Sample Text field.

  10. We'll change the color to red.

     

    Click the Item button.

  13. Next, we'll add a table.

    Click the New Style menu.

  15. Enter the desired information into the Style name field. Enter

     a valid value
     e.g.
     "Benefits table"

  16. We'll make a couple style changes to the whole table.

     

    Click in the Apply to: field.

  18. We'll change the font families and size.

  19. Click the Trebuchet MS, Helvetica, sans-serif list item.

  22. We'll then change the color of the table header background.

     

    Click the Apply to: button.

  27. Lastly, we'll make all of the cells italics for no good reason.

  31. Choose the library location where you would like your style sheet document to live and give your style sheet a name.

     

    Double-click in the Name: field.

     a valid value
     e.g.
     "HR "

  34. And now we will open a web page to see how a style sheet is used to apply its styles to the web page content.

     

    Click the Intro - Hotel Romeo tab.

  37. By default, UPK associates a style sheet named Standard to web pages. The Standard style sheet is a good example of some styles that can be created with the style sheet editor.

     

    Click the Browse button.

  38. Navigate to the location where you saved your style sheet.

  41. Notice the immediate change this has on the table as the default table style is applied. Next we'll identify a Header 1 element so we can see that style applied to our content.

  45. The text we marked as Header 1 now uses the default Header 1 style.

This is just the beginning of what style sheets offer, but you can see how style sheets will provide a great deal of value, consistency and time savings for any content authoring team.
