In general there are problems with woodstock components with respect to
surfacing EL expression errors.

During the conversion from 1.1 to 1.2 several new changes were not
addressed.
When the EL went from JSF EL to the "standalone" EL, exeption try/catch
blocks
were not added to catch EL expression errors.
In 1.1, JSF used to handle and surface them, since they owned them, but
not in 1.2.
