I had been using version 1.0. After upgrading to 1.0.2-SNAPSHOT and matching my pom.xml and web.xml to yours both spring injection and implicit MVC are working. Next step is to integrate Spring Security.

It should work fine. I modified the bookstore sample to use Spring and it worked OK. I have attached the maven project so you may try that and see if it works for you.
This works for 1.0.2-SNAPSHOT (as in the attached project) and 1.0.1 (with the version in the project modified).
I suspect there is something wrong with your web.xml or you are using an older version of Jersey older than 1.0.1. What version are you using?
