It runs out that in my case the problem was due to the following poor
style of XML Schema:
<sequence maxOccurs="unbounded" minOccurs="0">
<element ref="tns:SomeType"/>
</sequence>
Moving the cardinality specifiers from sequence to sub-elements fixed
the problem:
<sequence>
<element ref="tns:SomeType" maxOccurs="unbounded" minOccurs="0" />
</sequence>
XML Schema just gives way to much rope for us to hang ourselves :-(
Times like this I am reminding myself how much better/simpler/cleaner
Relax NG is.
