There are certain errors it can't recover from. And in 1.0, "unexpected
element" is one of them. I guess the error severity should have been
FATAL_ERROR.
So I'm afraid what you are seeing is by design. The wrong error level
will be fixed in the next release (and unexpected element will become a
recoverable error in the next release.)
