The original way of doing things now works, in Mojarra HEAD, and with
GlassFish 3.1 of revision 41356 or greater.
As I mentioned elsewhere, there were several problems, most importantly
GlassFish bug 13555, which Shing-Wai promptly fixed for me. Thank you
