Other platforms like SAP NetWeaver have yet another name for those kinds of
files:
application-j2ee-engine.xml<http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/EN/6f/80c8a05835b54ba68e5b79354b011a/frameset.htm>

see
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/EN/6f/80c8a05835b54ba68e5b79354b011a/frameset.htm

What most of these have in common is, that they're located in "META-INF",
but that is about the only thing standardized about these files.

Reza mentioned the JCA EG and most likely they're among the few that
currently use RAR files:
http://download.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/gipgl.html

As RAR files may be deployed both inside and outside an EAR, this seems like
a good point to explore.
Therefore, the RAR file as such has been specified already, but most of what
is currently in other separate places (the "META-INF" folder inside an EAR,
WAR or other artifacts) and worth standardizing should probably go into a
file like that.

Including the proposed configurations, Linda mentioned earlier.

Opinions?
