When I say "other messages that are not associated with a component" I mean
other javax.faces.application.FacesMessage instances created at some point
in the jsf lifecycle that have null as the component id. So, there must be
some message in the context that faces isn't able to display. Once you put
in the h:messages tag you should see what the message is and be able to
address the problem (hopefully!)
