For that, you need to use an <h:form> tag, like so:
<h:form id="demo">
<h:panelGroup layout="block" id="foo">
</h:panelGroup>
<h:commandLink action="#{someBean.actionMethod}">
<f:ajax execute="@this" render="foo" />
</h:commandLink>
</h:form>
This will trigger the action to be called, and will re-render the div
with id="foo".
