Ok, after two more hours of fiddling I finally got it, the solution sparkling with wit as much as I expected.

Viewing the page with exact url http://localhost:8080/NumberGuess/guess/index.xhtml did the trick. I have no idea why http://localhost:8080/NumberGuess/guess/ throws an exception and displays the raw template.

If anyone can provide some insight on this, letting me know whether it's my fault or a bug or a feature or any combination of previous, I'd be pleased ;)
