Thank you very much for your helpful response.
Yesterday I collapsed the class inheritance and declared the instance fields in the embedded class itself so they could be annotated (instead of the get/set methods). This enabled us to continue testing the app on Glassfish-v3.
I will revert to the original code using the annotation @Access that you mention and test again in a few days.
