You might take a look at the port unification tests in glassfish at
https://glassfish-svn.dev.java.net/svn/glassfish-svn/trunk/v2/appserv-tests/devtests/web/portUnification/src/main/java/org/glassfish/devtests/web/portunif
. It's a simplistic protocol but hopefully will get you over the hump in getting your implementation started. The full test code is in this tree as well. It uses the devtest harness so not all the source is in this tree but the relevant bits are at least.
