OK. Naturally, a small reliable test case is ideal.
Two other possibilities:
1. Try with a recent nightly or promoted build of 3.1 and see if it is still a problem.
2. If you are interested, you could use the debugger to step through that part of the code to see just what the problem is. (I know you have your real job to do!)
