Use case:
applications are deployed over a period of time from a build box.
lost build box's hard drive, no back up.
need to have a snapshot of all deployed applications so that there is a back up to rollback to during a failed new deployment.
hope that is clear.
by re-jaring did you mean to jar the application's folder under <domain>/applications/j2ee-applications/ ?
