So in reading this thread (because I am also interested in this subject), I realized that there is a key piece missing. And that is:

Why do we single thread the compiles?

I believe other app servers can use multiple threads for compiles. What would the reasoning be to not allow mutltiple threads to do compiles. There's no dependency chain to work on for compiles is there? I mean there is the include parsing, but it seems like you could easily come up with a threaded compile. People from above push other app servers when they hear about these differences.
