I would avoid using your own xerces and put it into lib directory:

On my 2.1.1 install. I had to list this in JVM option:

-Djavax.xml.parsers.DocumentBuilderFactory=org.apache.xerces.jaxp.DocumentBuilderFactoryImpl

Also had to put xerces files into /opt/SUNWappserver/lib directory on my install.
