Incidentally, when I set my maven <forkMode> configuration parameter for maven-surefire-plugin to "once", everything works as in Adam's original article, and Maven builds a "normal" java.class.path. Unfortunately, a <forkMode> of "once" will cause problems downstream for other tests which require "always". Maven folks will know what I'm talking about.
