Could not initialize class org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver?

We have installed a fresh glassfish 2.1.

Starting domain1 (the sample domain) has problems to ping Connection Pool "__TimerPool". We got :

java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.Exception: Could not initialize class org.apache.derby.jdbc.EmbeddedDriver

any idea what is going wrong?

We have installed many glassfish instances, and this fails very strange.
